When Should You Replace a Garage Door Instead of Repairing It?
Replace the door when the door itself is the problem: damaged or rusted panels, a warped frame, or an old uninsulated door that has reached the end of its life. If the panels are sound and the trouble is a spring, cable, roller, or opener, a repair is usually the better buy, and we will say so.
That honesty is a big part of why homeowners call us. We would rather fix a loose bracket than sell a door nobody needed, so when we do recommend a replacement, you can trust it is the right call.
Signs It Is Time for a New Door
- Panels are cracked, dented, or rusted through, especially along the bottom section
- The door is decades old, uninsulated, and the garage swings hot and cold with the weather
- Repairs keep stacking up on a door that is near the end of its life anyway
- The door has sagged or warped enough that it no longer seals against the floor
- You want a different look for the house, more light in the garage, or a quieter door
Not sure which side of the line your door is on? Our garage door repair services cover everything short of a new door, and we will give you an honest answer either way.
What Kinds of Garage Doors Do You Install?
We install four main styles of residential garage door, matched to your home's architecture and how you use the garage. Most come in a range of colors, window options, and insulation levels, and we walk through the choices with you at the estimate.
Traditional Raised-Panel
The classic steel door found on most homes in St. Charles County subdivisions. Durable, low maintenance, and available insulated or uninsulated.
Carriage-House
Styled to look like swing-out barn doors while still opening overhead. A popular upgrade when homeowners want more curb appeal from the front of the house.
Full-View Glass
Aluminum frames with large glass panels. They flood the garage with light, which suits garages used as workshops, gyms, or hobby space.
Insulated Steel
A steel door with an insulated core. It keeps an attached garage more comfortable through Missouri summers and winters and runs noticeably quieter.
What Size Garage Door Do I Need?
Garage doors are sized width by height in feet, so a 16x7 door is 16 feet wide and 7 feet tall. Most homes use one of a handful of standard sizes, but the right door is the one built for your exact opening, which is why we measure the opening, headroom, and side room on-site before quoting.
- Single-car doors8x7, 9x7, and 10x7 are the most common
- Two-car doors16x7 is the most common, with 16x8 and 18x7 close behind
- Taller openings8-foot heights suit trucks, vans, and garages with extra headroom
Older homes and custom builds often have openings that do not match a standard size. That is not a problem. We order the door to fit the opening you have.
Is an Insulated Garage Door Worth It in Missouri?
For an attached garage, usually yes. An insulated door keeps the garage closer to the temperature of the house through humid summers and cold winters, protects the rooms that share a wall with it, and runs quieter because the panels are stiffer and do not rattle.
A detached garage you only park in may not need it. We will walk through the tradeoff with you at the estimate. For the details on R-values and air sealing, read our guide to garage door insulation.
“Very satisfied with the whole process. Larry and his team replaced my old, somewhat beat up garage door and rails for a reasonable price. Great communication, easy to deal with. Larry even offered to just make some tune ups for a much lower cost instead of a full replacement, but I wanted more insulation and something new. I appreciate that he did mention less costly options. Now, I have a garage door guy!”
What Affects the Cost of a New Garage Door?
Five things drive the price of a replacement: the size of the opening, the material, insulation, windows and decorative hardware, and whether the opener is replaced too. We give you an exact quote after measuring on-site, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
- Size: a two-car door costs more than a single, and taller doors cost more than standard 7-foot heights
- Material: steel raised-panel doors sit at the lower end, carriage-house and full-view glass doors run higher
- Insulation: an insulated core adds to the price and pays you back in comfort and quiet
- Windows and hardware: glass inserts and decorative handles and hinges add cost
- Opener: reusing a healthy opener keeps the cost down, a new or smart opener adds to it
Be wary of anyone who quotes a firm price for a new door over the phone without seeing the opening. We walk every job in person first, and the estimate is free.

Garage Door Replacement FAQ
- Should I repair or replace my garage door?
- Repair it if the door itself is sound and the problem is a spring, cable, roller, track, or opener. Replace it when panels are damaged or rusted through, the door is very old and uninsulated, or repairs keep adding up. We will tell you honestly which one makes sense after looking at the door.
- How much does a new garage door cost?
- It depends on the size of the opening, the material, insulation, windows, and whether the opener is replaced too. A single steel door sits at the lower end, while insulated carriage-house and full-view glass doors run higher. We measure on-site and give you an exact quote before any work starts.
- Can you reuse my existing garage door opener?
- Often, yes. If your opener is in good shape and strong enough for the new door, we set it up to work with it. If it is worn out or undersized for a heavier insulated door, we will tell you and give you replacement options, including smart openers.
- Do you replace the springs and tracks with a new door?
- Yes, as standard. A new door comes with new torsion springs sized to its weight and new tracks and rollers. We can reuse existing hardware if you ask, but most of the time it can't be reused safely: springs matched to the old door would leave the new one out of balance and wear out the opener.
- Do I have to pay a deposit?
- No. We never require a deposit or charge an upfront fee. You pay once the new door is installed and working and you are satisfied with the job.
- Where are you located, and what areas do you cover?
- Stucky's Garage Doors is based in Wentzville, MO, and replaces garage doors across St. Charles County, Lincoln County, and Warren County, including O'Fallon, St. Peters, St. Charles, Troy, and Warrenton.
